HYBRID BIOMORPH

by Camila Andino

As a means to articulate an unconventional aesthetic language, this piece explores biological growth as a new material and formal aesthetic.

Through the aggregation of surface deformations, the forms begin to take unconventional shapes, yet seem more familiar every time. It evokes a sense of closeness through the way in which it emulates nature. Both scaleless and multi-scalar, it brings to question the idea of design as clean and smooth, by exploring biomorphic surface conditions as a new language of design and design-thinking.

This piece in particular is based on an aggregation of a reaction diffusion growth simulation and slime mold, over a minimal surface base mesh.

Her current research questions the dichotomy between digital and natural intelligence within the design process in order to develop hybrid design techniques, as well as to articulate an unconventional aesthetic language driven by disturbance and radicalism. Cami is the founder and EIC of We Arquitectas, curator for Plurality University, international lecturer and consulting architect. Previously, she was an architect at ATTUA Studio and assistant lead in design research for the Interactive Design and Visualization Lab (IDVL) at the Syracuse Center of Excellence.
