Soil Microscopy: Observing Life In The Soils

Soil Microscopy- Observing Life In The Soils - Craig Trester.jpg

What:

As a species we are beginning to understand how closely tied the quality of our soils are to the benefits they provide to our health, environment, and society. Even more recently the fact that the types and quantity microorganisms which reside within soil are responsible for its fertility and indicative of its current condition. Having the knowledge, methodologies, and skills to assess these microbial relationships is essential for us to understand the current state of our soils and improve their health.

In this workshop attendees will learn how to take soil samples from sites in question, prepare slides with soil material from their samples, understand visual indicators of soil condition, and identification of the variety of soil microbes by morphology.

This will be facilitated by a combination of visual aids through live demonstration via my web cam, digital digital dissecting microscope, and compound microscope with a built in digital camera; all of which I plan to screen share through a Zoom presentation.

What to bring:

If they wish to follow along or duplicate it in the future: Compound microscope with

light condenser/aperture, microscope slides, cover slips, glass eye dropper/squeezable plastic pipette, non-chlorinated water, 15mL test tube, plastic spoon, plastic bags, marker, apple corer, nitrile gloves.
