Interplanetary SynBio: Speculating the Future of Synthetic Biology in Space Exploration

space-synbio - Sara Nejad.png

What:

We are on the cusp of two major technological revolutions: on demand synthetic biology and long-duration human space exploration. Both technologies bring exciting prospects for the future of humanity, along with challenges and unforeseen consequences. Now is the time for diverse perspectives to speculate and co-design this future.

What will space exploration look like in 20-50 years? What role will synthetic biology play in shaping this future? How would we interact with this technology in space? What new organisms will we design and why? Will we still be fully human, or transhumans that can thrive in extreme and inhospitable environments? How about in the next 100-200 years?

What to expect: In this workshop, first, we briefly discuss the current state of synthetic biology in the context of space exploration, as well as near future trends. Next, we co-imagine and speculate a biodesigned multiplanetary future in the next 20-200 years. Then, we explore how synthetic biology can help us to create that future.

What to bring:

Your wild imagination! (we will collaborate virtually on Miro) The outcome: A collection of thoughts, words and images depicting a biodesigned interplanetary future.
