The Sporenet Protocol - an exceptionally low cost and easy way to store and transport DNA

image1 - Keoni Gandall.jpeg

What:

The Sporenet Protocol is a protocol for shipping plasmid DNA in Bacillus subtilis spores. Bacillus subtilis spores have the following advantages:

  • 1. Can be stored at room temperature for decades

  • 2. Can be shipped on normal paper in letters

  • 3. Extremely low production costs If implemented on a wide-scale, -80c freezers will not be needed to store and share DNA, and material can be directly recovered without a transformation. By virtue of the source material that gets shipped, production and shipping costs get dropped enough to enable mass distribution of plasmids for 100x cheaper than it is today.

In this workshop, we'll do a "Hello World" with the Sporenet protocol, showing how to recover spores from paper. For anyone who wants to follow along, I will ship a real Sporenet letter so you can recover a plasmid from spores yourself!

What to bring :

You just need to follow along via our hello world protocol as mentioned above.
