How community biology labs promote research and elevate problem solving skills in the communities

How community biology labs promote research and elevate problem solving skills in the communities

During the resent months, the deadly pandemic Covid-19 has rapidly spread affecting every part of the world with the rural or sub-urban zones being affected the most. As a result, community biology labs located in these communities have sought ways to remedy the situation through biological research and seeking ways to engage members of the community in helping to prevent the continuous spread of the pandemic. These efforts can be seen through the participation of some labs like the Mboalab in Yaounde Cameroon in organising discussion session investigating how to use very simple , cost effective means to prepare hand sanitizers, face masks, and automatic gel dispensers that the community members could replicate and “home -make” their own versions. This is done through creation of an internal information department that is responsible for searching latest information regarding the most acceptable methods of preventing the spread of Covid-19. By so doing many simple methods are being developed and applied which follow the FDA and WHO recommendations in preventing infection and the spread of the Covid-19 virus and future pandemics or health issues.

Margarita Mora: Securing Indigenous Guardianship of Vital Ecosystems

Margarita Mora is passionate about empowering local groups in their efforts to manage their territories. She has dedicated the past 15 years to devising and implementing strategies for integrating conservation into a positive vision of the future for these communities. Margarita, as the Managing Director of the Conservation Stewards Program of Conservation International (CI), a pioneer in the conservation agreements model, has been involved in conservation agreement initiatives in 19 countries around the world. She is applying the lessons and experiences from this work to shape Nia Tero’s approach to building partnerships with Indigenous peoples and local communities worldwide. Margarita believes that if ecosystems that are vital for humanity’s well-being are to thrive, the people who have sustained these places and are most knowledgeable about them must also thrive. She is a Conservation Fellow at the Mulago Foundation, a Director’s Fellow at the MIT Media Lab, and a Heinrich Böll Stiftung alumna.

Community Bio Fellows Program (With Abel Cano)

The Global Community Bio Fellows Program is designed to provide professional development, leadership training, and peer support for emerging leaders in our global community.

Global Community Bio Fellows will learn (1) how to identify community stakeholders and challenges, (2) build strategic goals, and (3) effectively organize through community mobilization toward targeted outcomes. These sessions will be guided by community organizer Abel Cano in consultation with Dr. Marshall Ganz. Fellows will also research, develop, and implement a specific project that can be readily deployed.  We hope to amplify their intrinsic abilities and game changing goals set by our Fellows in order to drive progress in the Global Community and beyond.
